No, what we do with time is funny. We grab hold of something so intangible and thrust it onto a clock, onto a calendar, we throw in words and numbers and we define it, we demarcate it, we personalize it.
We talk about my time and your time, but really, how can time belong to anyone?, and yet it does.
So it’s going to be even funnier when I say that the best gift that we could possibly give each other is something that doesn’t even belong to us.
Over the past several weeks I have come to realize that the absolute greatest gift that you could give people is your time, and it begins the moment you realize that time was never yours or mine to begin with, it just was.
Somehow we, as the crazy clever race we are, found a way to divide this phenomenon and bestow a share each onto people’s laps.
We have all heard parables about the men who had to make use of the talents their master gave them, but have we ever stopped to consider that maybe our greatest blessings are not our merely our talents but something we have created for ourselves, our time?
When I think of it thus I feel obliged to use time for the glory of those who gave it to me, mankind, and the only way to do that is to fill it up, all those hours and all those days, giving my time to someone else.
It may be a friend, an acquaintance, or sometimes it may be someone who you don’t even know. The thing about giving away your time is that those who need it will find you, if only you are open to be able to share it with them.
Sometime a few weeks ago, I was approached by someone who needed my time. I couldn’t do much for her, I barely even knew her, all I could do was listen and try to tell her what I thought I knew in the best way that I knew how to but she seemed so genuinely grateful to have someone to share her thoughts and feelings with that my heart was instantly moved.
In all the days that have passed since then, I have embarked upon a life changing mission to give my time. I have come to know that just like the talents, the more we use our time, the more we somehow have to give. Nobody ever lost their time by giving it to those who need it.
In the past few weeks I have had the honour of speaking with people, people who were until recently nowhere in the equation of my life, at a time when they needed me each in their own little ways. It is so humbling to realize the difference you can make with nothing but a listening ear and a heart ready to accept and love. We are not put on this planet to rough it alone, and none of us are alone, turn to the person next to you and tell them you need them, be the person next to her who is there when she needs you, it is just as simple as that.
We are all here cause we’ve got each other and the kindest way to pay tribute to that is to share your greatest treasure with another, your precious time.
