I’ve always had an odd sort of love for the unconventional.
This often leaves me at the very annoyed receiving end of “You haven’t watched THAT?!” or “I can’t believe that you haven’t read THAT book yet!”
Well yes, I haven’t. I haven’t watched or read ANY of that and let me tell you why.
One day (and YES, there will be that day!) when my books are on the shelves of stores all around the world, I want people who’ve never heard my name to walk into the bookstore, like the colour of my book, like the sound of my name, be intrigued by the 100 words printed on the back of my book, and I want them to pick me.
I want them to pick me over the Paulo Coelho they held in their right hand. I want them to pick me over the latest way Rhonda Bhyrne was promising to change their lives (and I have no doubt that she probably would at that! That woman is a league of her own!). I want them to pick me over that strangely enrapturing new tale Mitch Albom just spun. I want them to pick an unknown book by an unknown author.
And then for the first time in my life, I believe I will know what it’s like to actually be seen.
So yes, I go into a bookstore hoping to give someone a chance.
If only I could approach the rest of my life that way.
